ABOUT US

About Saddle Up and Read

Saddle Up and Read is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based out of Wendell, NC.

Two-thirds of kids in America who aren’t reading proficiently in fourth grade will end up on welfare or in jail.

This disproportionately affects children of color.  Even though millions of dollars have been spent on literacy in America, literacy rates are struggling to improve. There are many factors to consider when questioning why this happens.  One includes the lack of representation of diverse characters in books. Children read more when they see themselves in books.  With the help of the community and supporters around the country, Saddle Up and Read has created a library of books that feature diverse and multicultural characters. We believe in the power of reading to feed one's imagination. It brings a little extra magic when horses are in the mix!

Our program is committed to encouraging youth to read. We achieve this through reading activities with our horses and story time events in the community.
